As you probably already know, the Nokia N96 was Nokia’s second handset to come in a dual-sliding form factor, the Nokia N85 the third, and the Nokia N86 8MP the fourth (and latest). These phones actually exhibit how a media-centric Nseries phone should look like, with external music keys, large screens and loads of connectivity options for sharing content. Nokia’s been messing around with these types of phones for quite some time now, and with the Nokia N86 8MP, it looks like they’ve hit the proverbial jackpot once again.

The Nokia N86 8MP is only a tad larger than the Nokia N85 (0.4 x 1.4 x 0.5mm to be exact). This means that newest of the bunch is just as pocketable as both of its earlier versions.

The Nokia N96 didn’t exactly wow the crowd with its 5 megapixel camera and dual-LED flash, and neither did the Nokia N85 (the biggest reason being the Nokia N82, with its vastly more powerful and useful built-in Xenon flash). The Nokia N86 8MP, however, is a different story, as it is Nokia’s very first 8 megapixel cameraphone. This is a landmark phone for the company, and as usual it also comes with a Carl Zeiss lens and Tessar optics for better image quality. Actually an update was required here,( as usual, a dual-LED flash which hampers it to become great built-in camera).

If you notice, they all also have the easy access external music control keys when they are slid down, which first appeared on the Nokia N95. All three designs look the same, except for the Nokia N86 8MP, whose buttons look more rounded, and appear to have zoom in/out keys. This is probably intended for use when taking photos, which means that Nokia decided to move the zoom in/out function from the volume keys to these buttons.

As for their screens, well, the Nokia N96 is a bit out of place since both the N85 and N86 8MP feature OLED screens, which have been proven to kick LED arse any day. Screen size is the same across al units at 2.6-inches, displaying up to 16M colors in 320 x 240 resolution.

Nokia N86 8MP Nokia’s new imaging flagship, since even though it has an 8 megapixel camera, it’s still no match for the 5 megapixel Nokia N82 with its Xenon flash. And it’s just about the same as the old Nokia N85 or even the Nokia N96 in the form factor, software, and overall features front, so I can’t see where Nokia will position this handset. Guys who have the Nokia N85 won’t be eager to upgrade to this thing, and the question remains whether the 8MP camera will be enough to sway some users.

A member from our Network, Meraj Chhaya, was at the Carl Zeiss Factory tour powered by WomWorld and was able to review and to get in touch with the Nokia N86 8MP for a night (yah, he slept with the N86). At the Nokia N86 blog we decided to get you a huge pictures list, with comparisons to the Nokia N96.

This Nokia N86 contains the highest megapixel count in any Nokia, and is the flagship of camera-phones for the manufacturer. As you know the N8x series are normally phones with great cameras and N86 is the latest one with the best camera. Nokia N86 has an 8 Megapixel Camera and contains a 2.6″ AMOLED display with QVGA resolution (240×320 pixels), the camera has autofocus, dual LED flash, geo-tagging, panorama mode, wireless and online sharing capabilities. Nokia N86 has Bluetooth, HSDPA, DLNA-certified Wi-Fi, A-GPS, a 3.5mm audiovisual jack, an FM transmitter, Ngage gaming platform, and a kickstand. This smartphone runs on the Symbian OS9.3, with S60 3rd edition Feature Pack 2 software platform.

Nokia N86 versus Nokia N96 comparison summary

In a brief way, we got a comparison between the Nokia N96 and the N86 phone that can be complemented by the pictures, in the gallery, that are in the end of the post.

Despite Nokia N86 and Nokia N96 have the same dimensions the N86 is much heavier than the N96 and a bit more glossy, making that fingertips and other marks stay on the phone, weighing at 149g. The front of the N86 contains thin buttons, similar to the N82 but there’s no multimedia key. N86 has solid keyword buttons standing out from the phone, while the N96 ones stay in line with the rest of the platform. N96 display size is of 2.8″, while the N86 has a thinner 2.6″ display with AMOLED screen. Like the N96, Nokia N86 has a second slide keyboard with extra keys, that can be used for N Gage games, to take pictures or to make zoom, this keyboard has been really a success with N96 and not having it on the N86 would be strongly bad to the main function of this phone – entertainment.

In terms of camera The N96’s back part is filled with a glossy finish (I really don’t like it). The N86 instead has a clean surface. Both of the phones’ cameras are placed in the same position, but the N86 does have a shutter cover, unlike the N96. Both of them have the kickstand around the camera.

The 1200mAh battery of the Nokia N86 allows a great time without charging the phone, much greater than the N96. This way the Nokia N86 proves that it pays it price, 399£. You can buy the Nokia N86 from ebay, from the Nokia Store or from Amazon.

He starts off by saying Nokia planned to release the Nokia N86 8MP as the N85 8MP similar to the Nokia N95 8GB and N95. He says it may be because the users were disappointed with the issues of the N85 and Nokia didn’t want them to think that this handset was the same. Nevertheless, he says the N86 8MP has excellent build quality.

He says that the N86 8MP is a refurbished N85 both in terms of build quality and camera. It’s Nokia’s Imaging Flagship. Nokia says it doesn’t believe in the Megapixel race saying it’s better to focus on the Lens Quality, Algorithm etc.

They say that even though the Nokia N86 Camera lacks a Xenon Flash, it’s camera unit has the next level of performance with a bigger, better sensor, variable (and wider) aperture, wide angle optics and faster shutter speeds. This means that it will cope in dark situations even without the use of any flash.

They take the latest prototype of the Nokia N86 8MP and compare it to the king of Nokia cameraphones ie Nokia N82.

Here is a quote from the review and comparison:

“The limiting factor with most camera phone photos is that there’s simply not light registering on the small sensor for good indoor photos. So you get blurred images (a result of having to keep the shutter open for longer to gather enough photons) or ‘noisy’ images (a result of there simply not being enough photons captured to produce reliable and consistent colours). Or both.

The sensor in the N86 8MP is almost certainly bigger and more sensitive, plus the optics themselves are listed as ‘wide angle’ and the widest setting in the much trumpeted ‘variable aperture’ (f2.4) is half a stop wider than that (f2.8) in the fixed aperture N82, giving 50% more light in extreme conditions. It all adds up to better photos when the chips (and lights) are down.

See the example photos below, ripe for analysis. Firstly, a photo taken by the N86 8MP in normal indoor (but bright) conditions. Click through to see a typical snap from the N86 8MP in all its glory:”

As many of you may know, the Nokia N86 8MP was initially called Nokia N85 8MP and Nokia intended to launch it as a minor upgrade to the Nokia N85 as in the case happened to the N95 and N95 8GB. But then Nokia decided to give it a different product number and promote it up the line and that resulted in the Nokia N86 8MP.

They say that even though in the end Nokia gave it a higher model number, there are only a handful of differences looking at the specifications sheet and they wanted to compare the phones to see the difference.

They go on to talk about how the physical dimensions of the devices are also very similar and how the Operating System remains unchanged. They point out the improved keypad and keys, drop in battery life even though the battery capacities are the same and how the better camera unit is the main selling point of the Nokia N86 8MP.

Overall they have given a good thought over the two devices and to read their conclusion, visit the link below.

Here we compare the 8 Megapixel sliders of Nokia and Sony Ericsson and see who wins as an all rounder.

Design- Both the N86 and the C905 are sliders. But the N86 is a dual slider with media keys on the other end of the slider. The C905 is thicker than the N86 and is the less portable of the two. The N86 also has a built-in kickstand for watching videos etc. So the N86 wins the design part.

So the Score is N86-1/C905-0

Colours- The N86 is available in two colours, Black and White. But the C905 is available in four colours i.e in Night Black, Ice Silver, Copper Gold and Tender Rose. Thus the C905 poses an advantage as it entertains various kinds of users with it’s looks be it men, women or kids.

Score is N86-1/C905-1

Screen-The N86 has a bigger and better screen. The N86 has a 2.6″ OLED screen but the C905 has a 2.4″ TFT display. The N86 display shows more vibrant colours and a better contrast ratio.

Score is N86-2/C905-1

Mermory-The C905 has 160MB of internal memory and it can be expanded using M2 cards (a 2GB card is included in the sales package). The N86 has 8GB of internal memory and can be expanded using Micro-SD cards. Micro-SD cards are available upto 16GB now and the 32GB ones are coming. Thus with the 8GB onboard and extra 32GB, the N86 beats the C905 even if you put a 32GB card (which isn’t available) into the C905.

Score is N86-3/C905-1

Connectivity-Both the phones are equipped with all means of connectivity including HSDPA, HSCSD, GPRS, 3G, Wi-Fi, EDGE, micro-USB and Bluetooth.

Score is N86-4/C905-2

Music-The N86 has better speakers and a 3.5mm jack that allows plugging in of any normal headphone. Thus you have better sound quality through whatever you like the faster way.

Score is N86-5/C905-2

Video-The video experience is similar on both the devices although the N86 may pose an advantage at time due to it’s bigger OLED screen. However it does not make much of a difference and both should be awarded in this aspect.

Score is N85-6/C905-3

Camera-Both the devices have advantages and disadvantages in this aspect. The C905 has xenon flash, face and smile detection. The N86 has a variable apperture lens and wide lens.

Score is N86-7/C905-4

Video Recording-N86 can record 30fps videos at VGA resolution but the C905 can manage 30fps videos at QVGA resolution only.

Score is N86-8/C905-4

Battery-The N86 has a more powerful 1200mAH battery while the C905 has a 930mAH battery. Though the specs demand a higher battery life for the C905, in daily life with use, both are around the same.

Score is N86-9/C905-5

So overall the N86 wins as an allrounder. Although the C905 lost, it was by small defects/disadvantages and it may appear as a better choice for some people.
