As many of you may know, the Nokia N86 8MP was initially called Nokia N85 8MP and Nokia intended to launch it as a minor upgrade to the Nokia N85 as in the case happened to the N95 and N95 8GB. But then Nokia decided to give it a different product number and promote it up the line and that resulted in the Nokia N86 8MP.

They say that even though in the end Nokia gave it a higher model number, there are only a handful of differences looking at the specifications sheet and they wanted to compare the phones to see the difference.

They go on to talk about how the physical dimensions of the devices are also very similar and how the Operating System remains unchanged. They point out the improved keypad and keys, drop in battery life even though the battery capacities are the same and how the better camera unit is the main selling point of the Nokia N86 8MP.

Overall they have given a good thought over the two devices and to read their conclusion, visit the link below.

nokia n86 8mp white 24 300x300 Nokia N86 8MP vs Nokia N85As many sources say, the N86 8MP was supposed to be called as the N85 8MP but Nokia thought it was better with the higher model index.  So I thought why not compare the N86 8MP and the N85 and decide whether Nokia’s ideology of giving a higher model index to the N86 8MP was the right choice and even if it wasn’t, how much better is the N86 8MP compared to the N85.

1.Design and Dimensions-Both the phones are dual slider’s and their size remains the same more or less. However the N86 is on the larger and heftier side as it measures 103.4*51.4*16.5mm compared to 103*50*16mm of the N85. The weight has also increased from 128grams on the N85 to 149grams on the N86.

2.Build Quality-The N85 has severe build quality issues such as wobbly slider, removal of area around the d-pad, creaking etc. The N86 seems to have overcome these issues and by summarising from many previews, I can say that many have praised it’s notable improvement in build quality.

3.Keys-The N85 had it’s keys embedded onto the body i.e they were not raised and it wasn’t as comfortable as the conventional keypad. The N86 solves the problem as it has proper keys that are raised, have proper spacing between them and are easier to use. They have done the same to the media keys also.

4.Screen-The screen on the N85 and N86 are exactly the same i.e both use the same OLED 2.6″ screen with resolution of 240*240 and displays upto 16Million colours.

5.Memory-The N85 had 85Mb of internal memory which could be increased by using micro-SD cards. The N86 however comes with an 8GB of built-in memory and also the possibility of using micro-SD cards. Thus the N86 provides more memory to satisfy all your needs.

6.Camera-The N85 had a 5MP camera with autofocus,dual-LED flash and Carl-Zeiss optics. The N86 takes it to the next level with it’s 8MP Carl-Zeiss optics camera with dual-LED flash, autofocus. It is the first cameraphone to use a variable apperture lens and also has a wide angle 28mm lens. Due to this the camera produces excellent pictures.

7.Others-The N86 seems to have a better camera shutter key and speakers. The N86 also has a kickstand to enable comfortable watching of videos .

Overall, there are many improvements and since there are no downgrades in features, I think the model index change is rightly deserved and the phone basically fixes everything that was wrong with the N85.
